April 2019 Club of the Month

By Melissa Abele April 8, 2019

This month we would like to congratulate Spoons & Spools Crafts & Creatures 4-H Club for being awarded the Nebraska 4-H Club of the Month for April 2019. This club from Sterling, NE, in Johnson County, has truly made a difference in its community. The club is dedicated to building strong citizenship and teamwork through various activities.Spoons and Spools 4-H Club started making quilts for local veterans through the Quilts of Valor program two years ago. The group’s first quilt was presented to a World War II Veteran at the community Veteran’s Day Program. They received so much support from the community that last year they were joined by the Sterling Livestock Club and five quilts were made. One went to another World War II Veteran and the others went to Korean War Veterans. The local Legion has helped the 4-H Clubs identify the local veterans and the Ladies Auxiliary has helped out with fundraising and a few of their members, who are also 4-H Alumni, have helped on days we are piecing the quilts. In an effort to have a couple of quilts available for presentation at the Memorial Day Program, members started piecing two quilts on February 17, 2019. The plan is to add additional quilts over the spring and summer months for the Veteran’s Day Program this fall. We had several young members present who had never sewn before, and some of those who had sewn simple straight seams were given move challenging task like measuring and cutting the material and zig zagging around the appliqued stars. The Nebraska 4-H Foundation provides the 4-H Club of the Month program to all Nebraska 4-H clubs throughout the state.Clubs can nominate themselves by telling why their club should be chosen as Club of the Month.A different club will be chosen each month and will be awarded with a certificate and $50 cash card.
