Nebraska State 4-H Camp & Nebraska National Forest at Halsey
4-H Foundation 11th Annual Charity Trail Ride
On October 10th and 11th, 76 horseback riders braved harsh weather conditions to participate in riding through the trees and hills of the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey. They were part of the eleventh annual 4-H Foundation Charity Trail Ride to raise money to support 4-H youth programs in Nebraska. Riders from age 5 to age 76 from 4 states rode on the four rides which began on Saturday morning, October 10th. Organizers of the two-day event planned rides which began and ended at Windmill 25 which is located about three miles south of the Scott Lookout Tower on Road 203. The rides continued on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
140 people attended the Saturday evening activities that featured a steak fry dinner and old-time musical entertainment by the Baker Family Band from Ord. World Champion Auctioneer Matt Lowery of Burwell auctioned off donated items for the charity auction which raised over $2,800 for the 4-H Foundation. Along with the entertainment and auction, a new addition to the Saturday evening activities was a “Bench Branding.” Bob Weber, Foundation Trustee from Friend, donated two chain saw-carved wooden benches to the Foundation, one bench to remain at the State 4-H Camp and the other to be auctioned. Ranchers donated $250 to put their brand on the benches. Along with the branded benches, Murdoch’s supplied all participants with a T-shirt including the brands and Trail Ride logo. The branding was a nice addition, especially on a cold day!
The Foundation supports a variety of 4-H activities in the state, including the State 4-H Camp at Halsey and 4-H centers near Gretna and Alma, State Fair premiums, funding for award trips to 4-H youth and their sponsors to such national contests as the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, and the Western National Horse Judging contest in Denver, CO., as well as scholarships to the National 4-H Conference and other key initiatives that fulfill the Foundation’s core mission.
A breakfast and inspirational service was held at the State 4-H Camp for the riders on Sunday morning, with the Baker Band providing inspirational music.
Horses are stalled in pens that are set up from portable corral panels which are generously provided by local ranchers in the Halsey and Thedford area. Certified weed-free hay for the horses was donated by Dave and Loretta Hamilton of Thedford.
The ride is a fun-filled and exciting weekend which is enjoyed by families and many others each year. There were several three and four-generation families on the ride, as well as several family groups of brothers and sisters and their children.
Plans are underway for the 12th annual ride to be held October 9 and 10, 2010 at the same location.
